Support to the girls Razkal football team February 2018
The girl’s Razkal football team is in Mohon, Philippines. It is a team open to any and all girls who want to play. It first started in 2010 by Andy Apostol and his two high school friends, Ronan and Rhosner. The team was created to allow underprivileged girls the opportunity to play sports instead of going down the path of drugs and to hopefully give them the chance to get a scholarship through football.
During October 2017 we met with Andy Apostol who helps to support the girl’s Razkal football team in the Philippines. Andy is originally from the Philippines and helps to support the girl’s team, as the boy’s team is supported by a local business man. The girls and boys Razkal teams were first created in 2009 by Andy and his high school friends Ronan and Rhosner. The boys team is coached by Rhosner while the girls team is coached by Ronan. To join and play in the team is free for the players.
They wanted to start a girl’s football team to allow underprivileged girls the opportunity to play sports instead of going down the path of drugs and to hopefully give them the chance to get a scholarship through football. The girl’s Razkal team has given the girl’s life skills in leadership, teamwork skills, self-discipline and is teaching them how to work hard.
We wanted to support Andy and the girl’s team by giving them football shoes, football pants, t-shirts, shorts, socks, and long-sleeved footballs shirts. As well as pencil crayons and a couple soft toys! We were very grateful to receive a large donation from Katarina Magnusson and Waldemar Schettini of football pants, long-sleeved shirts, socks, pencil crayons and soft toys to us, which was part of our donation to Andy!
Andy shipped the items to the Philippines and informed us that all the football gear that we gave him made it to the Philippines to the Razkals football teams. We are so happy that both the girl’s and boy’s teams can start using the football apparel! They also distributed the coloring pencils to the children at the local public elementary school! We are so thrilled to see that the items we supported them with made it, and are being put to good use!
The girl’s team does not have a football field to practice on, as it can be costly, and they do not receive funding, as well there are not a lot of football fields in the area. They practice on a church parking lot made from dirt. Throughout the practice the girls must move out of the way to allow cars to enter and leave the parking lot. The team consists of 15 core girls, who come to every practice, but on some occasions the practice can have up to 40 girls, as the team is open and free to all girls. Every Saturday the team practices for 2-3 hours and throughout the week depending on their upcoming game or tournament. All the girls work very hard and we hope that these new football clothes will encourage them to continue working hard despite the struggles they may face.
February 2018
We traveled to Mohon, Philippines to support the girls further. We donated many uniforms, cones to practice, training vests, futsals (indoor footballs), goal keeper gloves and football shoes to a couple girls who did not have. We also held three workshops. A team building workshop for the girl’s team as well as a self-awareness workshop for them. It really allowed the girls to open up and learn more about themselves. We held a self-awareness and gender equality workshop for the grade 12 students at Mohon Divino Amore National High school. We provided many of the football girls with mental and emotional support as many of the girls come from very difficult family backgrounds.
