As our journey in Kenya comes to a close, we reflect on our fourth and final day at Kenswed Hospital—a day marked not only by numbers and statistics but by the celebration of life, motherhood, and the remarkable care provided within these walls.

It’s staggering to learn that on average, 150 new patients are seen here each month. And since the start of 2019, a total of 400 babies have entered the world within these walls, with over 24,020 patients receiving treatment during this time. The Lööf Foundation, in their ongoing support, hosted a beautiful birthday party to honor not only the mothers but also the babies born since the hospital’s inception.

Approximately 180 mothers, babies, and children joined in the festivities, creating a lively atmosphere filled with warmth and gratitude. Sophie Loof, in her touching speech, shared her personal childbirth struggles and the genesis of the hospital’s idea. It was born out of a vision to create a safe haven for delivering babies, ensuring the best possible care before, during, and after birth.

The sentiment echoed throughout the gathering was one of immense appreciation for the hospital staff, described as friendly, professional, and deeply committed to providing exceptional care. Mothers shared their experiences, praising the postnatal care, the quality of food during their stay, and the thorough follow-up care provided during clinic visits for regular check-ups and vaccinations.

The celebration wouldn’t have been complete without a sumptuous meal, prepared with love by the talented students from Kenswed Vocational Training College. Cake and cupcakes added a sweet touch to the festivities, as Sophie had the pleasure of meeting the very first babies born at Kenswed Hospital, Brave and Sophie, who are now 5 and 6 years old, respectively.

Today was a reminder of the transformative impact of compassionate care and the joy that comes from nurturing new life. As we bid farewell to Kenswed Hospital, our hearts are filled with gratitude for the incredible work being done here every day.
