LÖÖF FOUNDATION ATTENDS THE RIGHT LIVELIHOOD AWARD ✨💚👏
On Wednesday our Founder and Chairman Sophie Lööf and her daughter Stella Lööf-Mårtenson who is fourth generation, attended the Right Livelihood Award, otherwise known as the “Alternative Nobel Prize”, as they celebrate their 40th anniversary this year. We felt honored to receive an invitation and attend as the values and beliefs we uphold at Lööf Foundation match the same idea the ‘right livelihood’ instills. The ‘right livelihood’ embodies the principle that each person should follow an honest occupation, which fully respects other people and the natural world. It means being responsible for the consequences of our actions. The sculpture the laureates receive is even made from Humanium Metal by IM; a unique material made of recycled metal from gun destruction programs in Central America.
In every generation, there are groups of people and individuals around the globe who valiantly uphold these principles of right livelihood, often working in the face of adversity. The Right Livelihood Award exists to honor and support such people. The 2019 laureates are:
-Human rights defender Aminatou Haidar from Western Sahara for her steadfast nonviolent action, despite imprisonment and torture, in pursuit of justice and self-determination for the people of Western Sahara.
-Lawyer Guo Jianmei from China for her pioneering and persistent work in securing women’s rights in China.
-Climate activist Greta Thunberg from Sweden for inspiring and amplifying political demands for urgent climate action reflecting scientific facts.
-Indigenous leader Davi Kopenawa and the Hutukara Yanomami Association from Brazil for their courageous determination to protect the forests and biodiversity of the Amazon, and the lands and culture of its indigenous peoples.
40 years have passed since the Nobel Foundation rejected an environmental prize, and the Swedish-German philanthropist Jakob von Uexkull decided to establish The Right Livelihood Award. The prize is today one of the most prestigious awards in sustainability, social justice and peace. It was a very meaningful and inspiring evening!
